Partnering with FareShare

fareshare

We are delighted to be a partner organisation of FareShare Southern Central, which opened in Southampton in April 2014. This means that, not only do we benefit from all the tins and packets donated via the twice-yearly neighbourhood food collections at Tesco stores, we are also able to take advantage of weekly deliveries of fresh and chilled goods. Much of what we receive has been rejected by the local supermarket distribution centres before it has even reached the stores. It is wonderful to be able to offer our clients items such as eggs, yoghurts and cheese. FareShare is a national organisation which fights poverty and tackles food waste, by redistributing it to its partner organisations. Take a look at http://www.fareshare.org.uk/ for more information.

Hand up, not hand out

food up front

We are pleased to be working with Seb Mayfield of Food Up Front. Seb is carrying out a research exercise with our partners, clients and the local community to gauge the opportunities and needs for grassroots projects in Winchester that help build a more food secure community. The aim is to reduce the number of people who find themselves in the desperate position of having to visit the food bank. For more information visit http://foodupfront.org/

Holiday lunch scheme

Lunch food

Hats off to one of our volunteers who came up with the brilliant idea of offering more support to our local families during the summer holiday. Our board of trustees were pleased to endorse this pilot scheme, which has seen the Basics Bank provide items of lunch food over the six week break, to school-aged children referred to us by a small group of schools. It can be a real struggle for some families, especially if they have five or six children, to find those extra meals out of term time. Hopefully our scheme has provided some relief for them and perhaps even enabled them to give the children a few holiday experiences that they wouldn’t otherwise have been able to afford.

Harvest appeal 2014

Tin

We are very grateful to the schools and churches that have already pledged to support us at Harvest Festival. We rely on this annual event for the bulk of our food stock. This year we would particularly love to boost our supplies of: tinned fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, sweet and savoury spreads, coffee, biscuits, custard and rice pudding. Thank you for your support!
