Food Collection at Waitrose

On Saturday 29 March and Sunday 30 March, we will be holding a food collection outside the Waitrose supermarket in Weeke. Please support us, either by volunteering to hand out shopping lists at the door or by donating an item of food to the collection.  If you would like to volunteer for an hour or two on either day, please email us at .

10th Anniversary

ZJAJan 001

We were delighted to welcome around 80 guests to a reception in the north transept of the Cathedral to mark this ‘bittersweet’ occasion.  It was lovely to meet supporters, trustees and volunteers (past and present) and an honour to be joined by the Mayor and Mayoress of Winchester, Ernie and Barbara Jeffs, and MP, Steve Brine. A celebration cake was cut by manager, Frances Rogers, and long-serving volunteer, Renee Bowe, before we joined the packed Cathedral for a very uplifting Unity Service which focussed on the work of Basics Bank and the Street Pastors. We are so grateful to the local churches, schools, businesses and numerous individuals who have supported us with donations of food, clothing, time and money. We couldn’t have done it without you – so THANK YOU!

More Thank Yous

The run up to Christmas was incredibly busy for us. Not only did we receive support from the usual quarters, but local businesses held some special events to help us out. Sainsbury’s customers, local churches and the pupils of Henry Beaufort School boosted supplies of everyday food items and added chocolates, biscuits, mince pies and puddings for a touch of sparkle for Christmas.  The Myers Touch in Kings Worthy held a special Christmas event for their customers, tradesmen and suppliers which raised £245. Staff at IBM, Hursley set up their own food collection point. So much food was donated that they were able to deliver a car load to us and one to the food bank in Southampton as well. Support of a completely different kind appeared courtesy of Hampshire Chronicle readers, who responded in their hundreds to the Giving Tree Appeal. We were literally overwhelmed with over 400 toys and gifts which we were able to distribute to our clients with their food parcels. Many were reduced to tears when we asked them to come and choose something for each of their children – it was pretty emotional for us too!

Thank you Winchester!

We just need to say a massive thank you to everyone involved in the recent Tesco/FareShare National Food Collection  – Tesco staff, volunteers and most of all to the shoppers who donated an incredible 169 crates of food over the weekend. This contribution is so important to us as we strive to meet the demand on our service. We are overwhelmed by the generosity of so many and our volunteers were encouraged by the genuine interest shown in our project. They were also extremely moved by the stories they heard throughout the weekend – some from ex-clients who were happy to ‘give back’ now that, thankfully, they find themselves in a more fortunate position. This is such a welcome boost to the ongoing support that we receive from churches, schools and the shoppers at Sainsbury’s. Thank you all so much!

Harvest Thanks

Yet again we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of so many people. To date we have received harvest donations from 20 schools, 32 churches and 5 other organisations. All is ‘safely gathered in’ and our store cupboards are looking healthy once more, which is a great relief. UHT milk runs out very quickly though – so cartons of full-fat and semi-skimmed UHT milk would be very welcome.

New Website

We are thrilled with our new website and hope that you like it too. Thanks go to Mark Irving of Finch Studios who helped us greatly with the design and build; and also to Hannah Bennett who created the lovely film for us.

Tesco/FareShare National Food Collection

This event will take place on 29 and 30 November and 1 December and we are delighted  that all the goods donated at the Tesco Extra store in Winnall will come directly to Winchester Basics Bank. We will need a small army of volunteers to greet the shoppers with a smile and hand out shopping lists to encourage them to contribute. If you feel that you could spare a couple of hours on any of the above dates please do get in touch via email with your preferred day and time. We hope to hear from you soon!

Christmas Preparations

Christmas sparkle

Could you help us to add a little sparkle to our food parcels in the run up to Christmas? We would like to be able to offer our clients some of the following items as a treat for the festive season: boxes of chocolates, tins of Christmas biscuits, chocolate tree decorations, small selection packs, men’s and women’s gift packs of toiletries. Donations, by the end of November if possible, can be left at either of  our distribution points during opening hours, in our trolleys at either of the local Sainsbury’s stores, or at MP Steve Brine’s office at 9 Stockbridge Road, Winchester. Thank you!

Fresh produce for Basics Bank

We are delighted to announce that since the end of June we have been receiving weekly supplies of fresh fruit and vegetables from organic supplier, Abel and Cole. The lovely produce has been extremely well received by our clients and we have also been able to share surplus stocks with ‘Georges’ (the local substance misuse service) who run cookery lessons with their clients.
