How to get involved

WE ARE CURRENTLY ONLY RECRUITING FOR DELIVERY DRIVERS AND HELP SORTING CLOTHES IN THE WAREHOUSE. SEE BELOW

We look for volunteers for various roles including:

Delivery Drivers

Our Drivers volunteer on a Tuesday or Friday afternoon, between 1 and 3pm, and collect pre-packed parcels from the donation hub at Winnall and deliver to clients in the Winchester and surrounding areas in their own vehicles.

You will need to check with your own car insurance that you are covered and we are not able to cover any expenses such as fuel.

Sorting clothes.

We receive a lot of clothes in our warehouse, as well as household items like kitchen utensils, bedding and towels.

On Tuesday afternoons, from 12.30 p.m. to 2.45 p.m. we are looking for volunteers who can sort the clothing into categories, discarding those that are worse for wear.

Clothing and other items are then sent out to the hubs.

Fareshare Food Collections from Waitrose

We collect surplus food (in crates) from Waitrose on Monday and Thursday evenings at 9.15 p.m. after the supermarket has closed. Volunteers in pairs will transport the crates in their own cars to our hub in Milland Road, where food is allocated to fridges or freezers depending on its use by / best before dates. Time between ringing the back door at Waitrose and successfully storing the food at Milland Road is usually one hour.

You will need to check with your own car insurance that you are covered and we are not able to cover any expenses such as fuel.

Hub Volunteers

Our Hub volunteers attend one of our food hub locations to help our clients select the goods they need, restack the shelves and sort donations (including clothes) that come direct to the hub locations. All staff will be required to complete an online food safety course. Initial training to take place at the donation hub location. Our current opening times are detailed – https://winchesterbasicsbank.co.uk/find-us/. We are not currently open at a weekend or in the evening.

You must be over 18 to volunteer at our client facing hubs.

Donation Hub Operators

Our Donation Hub operators attend the main site in Winnall to assist with unpacking and sorting food and hygiene products that have been donated. They also pack parcels to be delivered to clients. They need to be physically fit (e.g. can lift 15 kg). Opening times are a Tue or Fri 9 am – 12.30 pm.

Due to safeguarding requirements, we are unable to accept volunteers who are 16 and under, and only 17-year-olds in specific circumstances.

Collection from Stores

Our store collectors visit their nominated supermarket – Sainsbury’s (Badger Farm/ Middle Brook Street), Waitrose (Weeke) and the Co-op (Alresford). They collect items from the donation points and bring them to the donation hub in Winnall.

Collection from the store is dependent upon the store, but drop off to the Winnall donation hub is on a Tuesday or Friday between 9am and 3pm, or Wednesday morning for Alresford. They need to be physically fit (e.g. can lift 15 kg).
